Here are answers to FAQs
Our Handcrafted Soaps
At Boots & Briskets Soap Co, we pride ourselves on creating high-quality, handcrafted soaps. Each bar is made with care, blending thoughtful aromatherapy with a satisfying clean rinse so you receive a product that not only cleanses but also provides a truly premium bathing experience.
How does the B&B Insider sign-up and birthday gift work right now?
We’re rolling out our new Insider system and are still wiring up some of the automation behind the scenes. If you’d like a birthday gift, just add your birthday at checkout or drop us a note through the contact form and we’ll take care of you manually while we finish the tech side.
Natural Ingredients
Our soaps are crafted from natural ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible. We believe in the benefits of using ingredients that are kind to your skin and the environment. Rest assured that our products are as wholesome as they are effective.
Do you use EDTA or fillers in your soap?
Boots & Briskets Soap Co. does NOT use EDTA or any fillers in our bars. You will not find Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, or similar additives in our ingredient lists.
We keep our ingredients simple, readable, and focused on performance rather than fluff. Our labels follow an “in the pot” style. We list what actually goes into each batch in plain language. This way, there’s no confusion about what’s on your skin.
Are your products registered with the FDA?
Yes. Boots & Briskets Soap Co. is registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a cosmetic product facility in accordance with the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA). Each cosmetic product we manufacture is listed with the FDA through the Cosmetics Direct portal, including a full declaration of ingredients.
Does FDA registration mean your products are “FDA approved”?
No. Under federal law (21 U.S.C. § 364), the FDA does not approve cosmetic products or their ingredients before they are marketed, with the exception of color additives. FDA registration and product listing is a mandatory administrative requirement under MoCRA — it is not a product safety endorsement or approval. The responsible person (manufacturer) is legally responsible for ensuring the safety of cosmetic products and ingredients prior to marketing.
Where can I find the full ingredient list for each product?
Each product page on bnbsoapco.com displays the complete ingredient declaration in International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) format, in descending order of predominance as required under 21 CFR § 701.3. Ingredient lists are consistent with those submitted to the FDA in our product listings.
Why does the ingredient list say “Fragrance (Parfum)” instead of listing a specific scent?
Under 21 CFR § 701.3(a), manufacturers are permitted to declare proprietary fragrance blends collectively as “Fragrance” or “Parfum” on the label. This designation is used only for products that contain a commercially blended fragrance oil whose specific component formulation is protected as a trade secret by the fragrance supplier. Products scented solely with individual essential oils list each oil by its full INCI name.
Are your products made with natural ingredients?
Our products are formulated with grass-fed & grass-finished beef tallow as the primary base, along with plant-derived oils, beeswax, essential oils, and botanical extracts. All fragrance components — whether essential oils or fragrance oils — are sourced from suppliers who provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and IFRA Conformity Certificates. We do not use synthetic colorants or parabens in our formulations.
Do your products contain allergens?
Customers with known sensitivities should review the full ingredient list on each product page prior to purchase. Ingredient declarations are provided in INCI format and reflect all components present in the finished product, including carrier oils that accompany botanical extracts (e.g., Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, which is the carrier for our Rosemary CO2 extract). If you have a specific allergen concern, contact us directly via out contact page.
How often are your FDA product listings updated?
Under MoCRA (21 U.S.C. § 364(b)), product listings must be updated annually and whenever a product is discontinued or a material change to the formulation occurs. We maintain current listings for all products actively marketed on bnbsoapco.com.
What is tallow and why do you use it?
Tallow is rendered beef fat, listed on our labels under its INCI name “Tallow.” We source grass-fed tallow because of its naturally high content of fat-soluble nutrients and its fatty acid profile, which is structurally similar to human skin lipids. Tallow has been used in skin care formulations for centuries and is the primary functional ingredient in all Boots & Briskets bar soaps and balms.
Why are your bars ‘plain’ compared to pretty, decorated soaps?
We intentionally stay away from heavy decoration like florals, oats, and dried fruits in our bars. Those extras can look nice. However, they don’t always improve how the bar treats your skin. They also don’t necessarily benefit how it ages in the shower.
Instead, we focus on bar performance, skin feel, and rinse‑off. You’ll still see essential oils in many of our soaps. However, we’re selective about which ones we use. We research each blend for both aroma and function before it ever goes into a batch.
What scents do you use? Any plans for more?
We build our scents on a base of carefully chosen essential oils, and we’re picky about where we source them. Each scent is researched for its aromatherapy benefits. We also study how it behaves in tallow soap. Nothing is just “thrown together.”
We currently offer options like Sandalwood. We are working on even more true-to-nature versions, including a more pure sandalwood and even cedar. Mint, Turmeric and a few other classic, grounded scents are on our radar as we expand.
Are your soaps sold by size or weight?
Our bars are sold by weight. Each bar will be at least the stated net weight on the label; some bars may weigh slightly more due to hand‑cut variations.
Why do you only offer one bar size now?
We’re standardizing our bars to a single everyday size so you always know exactly what you’re getting. Right now, that’s our 4.5 oz bar—poured by hand, then cured, trimmed, and wrapped for consistent weight and performance. This keeps batching tight, cuts down on waste, and lets us focus on what matters most: grass‑fed, grass‑finished tallow, clean ingredients, and reliable lather every time.
Are you bringing back larger bar sizes?
We plan to reintroduce a 5.0 oz format in the future, but we’ll always keep sizing simple and clearly labeled. When that happens, we’ll announce it on the product pages. We’ll also include it in the B&B Insider newsletter and blog post as appropriate.
Whipped Tallow Facts
What is whipped tallow?
Whipped tallow is rendered beef tallow that’s been mechanically whipped while semi‑solid, which incorporates air and creates a lighter, cream‑like texture without changing the core ingredient.
How is whipped tallow different from a firm tallow balm?
Firm balms are dense and waxy, great for spot‑treating very dry or damaged areas, but they can feel stiff and need warming between the hands. Whipped tallow is airy and spreads more easily, especially on the face, with a faster “absorbed” feel that’s closer to conventional creams.
Am I just paying for air with whipped tallow?
No. Air changes the texture, not the nutrition. We sell our whipped tallow by net weight, clearly stated on each jar, so you know exactly how much real, grass‑fed tallow you’re getting regardless of how fluffy it is.
Why do you label by weight instead of volume?
Whipped tallow is a semi‑solid balm, not a liquid, so best practice (and US cosmetic guidance) is to label by net weight in ounces and grams instead of fluid ounces.
Does whipping change the benefits of tallow?
No. Properly rendered, grass‑fed tallow keeps its skin‑supportive fatty acids and fat‑soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) whether it’s whipped or left firm; whipping just changes how it feels and spreads on your skin.
Why would someone choose unwhipped instead?
Some people prefer a firmer balm for maximum occlusion, intense spot treatment, or longer shelf stability, since introducing air can make texture changes over time more likely compared to a solid balm.
Do your balms contain vitamin E?
Yes. All Boots & Briskets balms are formulated with Vitamin E Oil (Bioxan SF), a naturally derived antioxidant complex sourced from 100% non-GMO sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed. It is included to support product stability and provide antioxidant benefit to the skin. On our ingredient label, this ingredient is declared by its INCI components: Tocopherol, Beta-Sitosterol, and Squalene.
What kind of vitamin E do you use in your balms?
We use Vitamin E Oil – Bioxan SF from Eden Botanicals, a naturally derived, non-GMO sunflower-sourced antioxidant complex. Its active components — Tocopherol, Beta-Sitosterol, and Squalene — are listed individually on all product labels in accordance with FDA ingredient declaration requirements. We do not use synthetic vitamin E (DL-Alpha Tocopherol) in any of our formulations.
Why do you use lye (NaOH) in your soap?
We use lye (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) because it is essential to making real soap. When lye is combined with oils and butters through a process called saponification, it produces soap and glycerin; there is no lye remaining in the finished, cured product. All our soaps are made using the Hot Process method, which ensures thorough saponification and provides a safe, skin-friendly bar. Lye is what transforms oils into soap; without it, it’s not true soap.
How do I report an adverse reaction to your soap?
Serious adverse events related to cosmetic products may be reported directly to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or via MedWatch at fda.gov/safety/medwatch. You may also contact us directly at [your contact email]. Under MoCRA, we are required to submit reports of serious adverse events to the FDA within 15 business days of receiving such a report.
