Here are answers to FAQs

Our Handcrafted Soaps

At Boots & Briskets Soap Co, we pride ourselves on creating high-quality, handcrafted soaps. Each bar is made with care, blending thoughtful aromatherapy with a satisfying clean rinse so you receive a product that not only cleanses but also provides a truly premium bathing experience.

How does the B&B Insider sign-up and birthday gift work right now?

We’re rolling out our new Insider system and are still wiring up some of the automation behind the scenes. If you’d like a birthday gift, just add your birthday at checkout or drop us a note through the contact form and we’ll take care of you manually while we finish the tech side.

Natural Ingredients

Our soaps are crafted from natural ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible. We believe in the benefits of using ingredients that are kind to your skin and the environment. Rest assured that our products are as wholesome as they are effective.

Do you use EDTA or fillers in your soap?

Boots & Briskets Soap Co. does NOT use EDTA or any fillers in our bars. You will not find Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, or similar additives in our ingredient lists.

We keep our ingredients simple, readable, and focused on performance rather than fluff. Our labels follow an “in the pot” style. We list what actually goes into each batch in plain language. This way, there’s no confusion about what’s on your skin.

Why are your bars ‘plain’ compared to pretty, decorated soaps?

We intentionally stay away from heavy decoration like florals, oats, and dried fruits in our bars. Those extras can look nice. However, they don’t always improve how the bar treats your skin. They also don’t necessarily benefit how it ages in the shower.

Instead, we focus on bar performance, skin feel, and rinse‑off. You’ll still see essential oils in many of our soaps. However, we’re selective about which ones we use. We research each blend for both aroma and function before it ever goes into a batch.

Do you make 8 oz bars or other large sizes?

Right now our bars range from about 4.5 oz to 5.5 oz, depending on the recipe and cure. Our bars are a bit larger than many standard commercial bars. They are still comfortable in the hand and easy to use.

We’ve tested larger bars, but at our ingredient quality and cure time, an 8 oz bar would push the price higher than we’re happy with. For now we’d rather keep the focus on a bar that feels good to hold, lasts well in the shower, and stays fairly priced.

What scents do you use? Any plans for more?

We build our scents on a base of carefully chosen essential oils, and we’re picky about where we source them. Each scent is researched for its aromatherapy benefits. We also study how it behaves in tallow soap. Nothing is just “thrown together.”

We currently offer options like Sandalwood. We are working on even more true-to-nature versions, including a more pure sandalwood and even cedar. Mint, Turmeric and a few other classic, grounded scents are on our radar as we expand.

Are your soaps sold by size or weight?

Our bars are sold by weight. Each bar will be at least the stated net weight on the label; some bars may weigh slightly more due to hand‑cut variations.

Why do you offer 4.5 oz, 5.0 oz, and 5.5 oz bars?

We offer 4.5 oz, 5.0 oz, and 5.5 oz bars because those sizes tend to be the sweet spot for everyday use. Some people feel 5.5 oz is a lot of soap. Others want something more compact. We give you options to match your preference.

It’s more work on our end to pour, cut, and label multiple sizes. However, it also means every bar is weighed and handled with extra care before it reaches your home.

Whipped Tallow Facts

What is whipped tallow?
Whipped tallow is rendered beef tallow that’s been mechanically whipped while semi‑solid, which incorporates air and creates a lighter, cream‑like texture without changing the core ingredient.

How is whipped tallow different from a firm tallow balm?
Firm balms are dense and waxy, great for spot‑treating very dry or damaged areas, but they can feel stiff and need warming between the hands. Whipped tallow is airy and spreads more easily, especially on the face, with a faster “absorbed” feel that’s closer to conventional creams.

Am I just paying for air with whipped tallow?
No. Air changes the texture, not the nutrition. We sell our whipped tallow by net weight, clearly stated on each jar, so you know exactly how much real, grass‑fed tallow you’re getting regardless of how fluffy it is.

Why do you label by weight instead of volume?
Whipped tallow is a semi‑solid balm, not a liquid, so best practice (and US cosmetic guidance) is to label by net weight in ounces and grams instead of fluid ounces.

Does whipping change the benefits of tallow?
No. Properly rendered, grass‑fed tallow keeps its skin‑supportive fatty acids and fat‑soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) whether it’s whipped or left firm; whipping just changes how it feels and spreads on your skin.

Why would someone choose unwhipped instead?
Some people prefer a firmer balm for maximum occlusion, intense spot treatment, or longer shelf stability, since introducing air can make texture changes over time more likely compared to a solid balm.

Do your balms contain vitamin E?
All Boots & Briskets base balms are fortified with 100% D‑Alpha Tocopherol (vitamin E) sourced from naturally derived tocopherols, not synthetic variants. We include it to support product stability and to add an extra antioxidant boost for your skin. If we ever change suppliers or IU strength, both the label and the product listing SKU will be updated to reflect the new IU per jar so you always know exactly what you’re getting.

What kind of vitamin E do you use in your balms?
Boots & Briskets base balms are fortified with naturally derived D‑Alpha Tocopherol (vitamin E)—never synthetic “DL‑Alpha” blends. Our current batches use a 30,000 IU natural D‑Alpha Tocopherol oil, and future batches will transition to a naturally derived vitamin E from our alternate provider. Whenever we change brands or IU strength, we update both the label and the product listing so the current vitamin E source and IU per jar are always accurate.

Why do you use lye (NaOH) in your soap?

We use lye (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) because it is essential to making real soap. When lye is combined with oils and butters through a process called saponification, it produces soap and glycerin; there is no lye remaining in the finished, cured product. All our soaps are made using the Hot Process method, which ensures thorough saponification and provides a safe, skin-friendly bar. Lye is what transforms oils into soap; without it, it’s not true soap.
